Villager Voices Interview - Melissa Machowski

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

♥ Please tell the Village about yourself:
I am Melissa Machowski of M Design Boutique, Spoiled Cowgirl by MDB and Great Big Candles by MDB. I live in New England. I have also lived in Colorado, California and two Summers in Montana working at Glacier National Park. I love to make things by hand, to cook and garden and I find that I am most at peace when spending time outdoors or in my studio.

♥ Tell the Village about your business:
I make wedding and event favors, artisanal candles, giant candles, cold process soap and luxury bath and body products. Everything is made in small batches by hand in my studio and kitchen. M Design Boutique opened in 2007, and my subsequent sister shops have opened over the last few years.
I also enjoy writing articles about making what I make, and about what I’ve learned from being in business. Before becoming full-time on my shops, I was a freelance and contract graphic and web designer. I’ve got years of experience dealing with customers and clients, which gives me a wealth of information to draw from. I also do guest blog posts for Craft Cafe and The Sampler Village blogs and have published instructional articles on such sites as Craft Foxes and eHow and I was a staff writer for NerdBastards.com (a pop-culture website).

♥ What inspires you?
I've always found peace and beauty in the natural world. I’m inspired by the colors, fragrances and patterns abundant in nature. The love I have for my family and friends gives me the energy and inspiration to achieve a balanced life. When my work brings stress, my family brings balance.

♥ What do you love most about your business?
I do what I love to do. I make things that make life more beautiful, calm, fun and interesting. I love sharing what I make with the world, and demonstrating that things come from somewhere besides the shelves of a big box store, and that brings me a sense of accomplishment.

♥ Would you recommend Sampler Village for other artisans to participate in? Why or why not?
I think it works well for businesses that have something that can be distributed in sample sizes. The community of sellers that becomes available in SV becomes your family, and the support comes in a million forms, from venting about day to day business frustrations to sharing triumphs, resources, advice and cheerleading. The value of the SV community is priceless.

♥ Lastly, would you like to offer our readers a special or coupon code?
I will announce a coupon code for my Craft Cafe shop “Spoiled Cowgirl by MDB” on my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/spoiledcowgirlbymdb at 5pm EST on the day this article is published. The coupon will be good for 48 hours. After that time, note that I announce flash sales in my shops on facebook and twitter, so be sure to drop in and follow my shops!
